The IKEABagHack
This is the first inofficial web-preview via Mowecam of the IKEABagHack.
The IKEABagHack is a hack of the famous IKEA bags that serve as shopping baskets inside IKEA stores. Outside the stores these bags are widely used by young people to transport great amounts of laundry and/or emtpy bottles.
The basic idea behind this hack is to transform a huge inconvenient bag into a small fashionable bag. This should not be achieved by complex cuts, but by folding the IKEA bag. (The working title was iFolder). Only two straight cuts have to be made.
Instructions:
- Remove the bottom of the original bag by opening the seam.
- Also remove the seam on the side.
- Fold the bag (aka the long piece of blue plastic) in half. The handles of each side should be opposite of each other.
- After the process of folding two seams have to be made on the left hand side and ond the right hand side of the handles.
- Then remove the two loose remaining pieces behind one of the seams. (This is the ugly but quite simple part of cutting.)
- Turn the cloth through the open pocket in the middle and add another seam at the bottom.
- Twist the bag completely and your done.
The bag has three pockets that are big enough to hold the essentials of the semi-digital urban coffeehouse visitor: A small laptop, a power supply and a magazine.
A big thank you to Carolin, the goddess of sewing-machines.
[UPDATE] I published some picture of the IKEABagHack at flickr.
[UPDATE2] A lot of readers of the IKEABagHack kept on asking if we sell it. For those are not familiar with DIY this is your chance to get your BagHack.

Every IKEA sells the bags. There are yellow bags that are for in-store use only. But at the checkout they sell the blue bags. Only the color is different. They cost 1€ IIRC.

Hey, nice usage of the the IKEA bag, I have a few lying around at home.
I think that Mowecam is mainly valuable to send periodic images from a location without other Internet access than GPRS… but feel free to use it how you want.
I promise to open source it, just need to find some time to add a motion detector algorithm that will make it 1.0.

Thank you for all the great feedback. It’s nice to see when other people like your ideas!
I hope a few people will actually start producing their own IKEABagHacks. — Did anybody out there do it already?
For those who want to take part in treck’s “ikea bagomania” without having to go through the whole DIY-process we will provide a few of the bags shortly. (Of course there will be some cash involved then, but it will be a fair deal, don’t worry.)

Ok Lion, hier die exakte Beschreibung von Carolin, Chief Officer of Production:
1. Tasche ganz auseinandertrennen
Did that help you?

No all Ikeas sell the bags at checkout. They are just beginning to implement that in some stores in the states, the one near me has the plastic bags you get at the grocery store that they don’t charge for.
